Book publishing info, book publisher & self-publishing information
Need it yesterday? Call us! We can deliver it the day before yesterday! Book publishing information is the topic of this page. Are you seeking a book publisher? Whether self-publishing is your goal, or seeking a publishing house, we offer the following info: Very often, when we are through ghostwriting or editing a manuscript, our clients want to know "What's next?" They -- like you -- are interested in self-publishing or traditionally publishing their new book. Needless to say, the process of book publishing, be it traditionally through a book publisher or at one's own expense, is very complicated, and the wrong choices can often postpone or prohibit publication. Traditional Book Publishing: The ultra-competitive world of traditional book publishing is characterized by query letters, treatments, synopses, follow-up letters, follow-up calls, and most of all: rejections. Rejections are inevitable when an author is seeking acceptance by a traditional book publisher. That is why authors who dream of being published by a traditional book publisher should approach the process with care and persistence. In general, it's advisable to do the following: (1) generate a query letter, (2) fashion a list of 100 appropriate publishers and literary agents (using online research, or a guide such as the popular Writer's Market), (3) mail your query to those publishers and agents (don't forget to include a Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope so they can easily reply), and (4) secure a higher chance of success than those who are only knocking on a couple of doors. Is publication guaranteed? Nothing is. But persistent submission efforts are the only way to ensure that your book will be shopped around as thoroughly as possible. Self-Publishing: Those who opt to take matters into their own hands and go the self-publishing route face a different set of challenges. Which self-publisher is right for your book? Which self-publisher can you trust? Which one will help you market? Which one will aid you in getting sufficient distribution? Once you've answered those self-publishing questions, the process continues... Your book must be edited, formatted, contracted, submitted, designed, mounted, printed, and distributed. Needless to say, it's important to recognize that self-publishing is an entrepreneurial process. Indeed, many of our ghostwriting clients who self-publish do so because their books are essentially marketing tools for their own businesses. Or, self-publishing can be beneficial for those clients whose books are intended for a small, specific audience, as with an autobiography that's to be passed around to friends and relatives. The good news about self-publishing is that it maximizes the author's control over the finished product: more likely than not, the design, cover art, font, and format will be exactly as you want them. The bad news is that self-publishing companies won't always have the marketing and distribution power to help your book find a large audience. In recent years, however, self-publishing has gained increased credibility, because time and time again, self-published authors have marketed their way to mainstream success (and in many cases been picked up by traditional publishers as a result). If you have any questions about traditional publishing or self-publishing, we'll be pleased to answer them for you. It's never too early in the writing process for one to begin pondering that essential next step.
